With the Australian Taxation Office (ATO) and the Department of Immigration & Border Protection (DIBP) set to commence a data matching program on 1 September 2015, now is the perfect time to ensure that your company has procedures in place to ensure all employees have permission to work in Australia. One of the simplest tools is to register as an organisation for the Visa Entitlement Verification Online (VEVO).
As a registered organisation, you will have the ability to check whether a new or existing foreign worker has permission to live, work and/or study in Australia. You must have permission from the foreign national before you can conduct a VEVO check. It is important to note that VEVO will state whether the individual has permission to work in Australia, however it will not state who the employment permission is linked to (in the case of a Subclass 457 visa). Visa holders can now access their visa entitlement details through the myVEVO mobile app. The app is available to download from the itunes store or play store, making it extremely easy for a foreign national to evidence their visa status – no scrolling through emails or printing pages of official documentation.
In addition to VEVO, we recommend that you review the Employing legal workers webpage for information on how to ensure you maintain a compliant workforce. For tailored assistance and tips to ensure your company procedures remains compliant, please contact Expat’s visa team.
